Description

Symphyotrichum laeve  (syn. Aster laeve)

CT  DR  P

Soil:  Fertile, Well-drained
Light:  Full Sun
Moisture:  Average to Dry
Plant Height: 2 to 4 feet
Plant Width:  1 to 2 feet
Pests:  None
Landscape Value:  Great in perennial borders and naturalized areas, along woodland edges, and in drought-tolerant gardens.

Upright, clump-forming perennial with stout, smooth stems that feel almost waxy.  Leaves are blue-gray and clasp the stem.  Loose clusters of daisy-like violet-blue to purple flowers with yellow centers bloom late summer to late fall atop the stems.  Deadheading faded flowers will encourage blooming.  Trimming plants a few times during the growing season (similar to occasional deer browse) will promote branching and more flowers.  Attracts butterflies, songbirds and small mammals.  Tolerates clay soil, sandy soil, moderate drought, dry soil, shallow-rocky soil, and light shade.  Larval host to Pearl Crescent butterflies.  Makes a great cut flower.
