New this year! Clump-forming, cool season grass with unique flowering spikes. Plants form upright tufts of arching, bright green leaves. Greenish, bristly flower heads rise above the foliage in summer maturing to brown in late summer and persisting well into fall. Flower heads resemble bottle brushes particularly when backlit. In late winter, old foliage and seed stalks can be cut to the ground before new growth begins. Self-seeds under optimal growing conditions but is non-aggressive. Adapts to a wide range of soil types, including rocky soil, sandy soil and heavy clay. Seeds attract birds and small mammals that aid in seed dispersal by caching seeds in the fall. Tolerates moderate drought, dry shade, black walnut, and full sun if soil moisture is adequate. Larval host to Northern Pearly Eye butterflies and Leaf-miner moths. Makes a good cut flower.
