Description

Veronicastrum virginicum

CT DR P

Soil: Acidic, Rich, Well-drained
Moisture: Average to Wet
Light: Full to Light Shade
Plant Height: 4 to 7 feet
Plant Width: 2 to 4 feet
Pests: None.
Landscape Value: Provides a strong accent and good vertical height for the back of garden borders. Good for rain gardens, butterfly gardens, meadows, naturalized areas and woodland edges.

New this year! A dramatic addition to the garden! Clumping, upright perennial with unbranched stems bearing whorls of dark green leaves. Dense, terminal clusters of tiny, white to pale blue, tubular flowers bloom from late spring to early summer, opening from the bottom up. Lateral clusters give a candelabra-like appearance. Deadhead spent flower clusters to encourage blooming. Can be cut back to basal growth after flowering to stimulate new growth and possibly late summer or fall blooming. Soils should not be allowed to dry out. Plants may be slow to establish, growing slowly in the first year but recovering in the second growing season. Attracts butterflies, moths, large numbers of native bees, and predatory insects that prey on pest insects. Tolerates light shade but will flop over and require support if too much shade.
