Landscape Value: Excellent for massing in woodland gardens or naturalized areas. Great for adding texture to the garden. Good as an accent plant or grouped in shady areas of perennial borders, rock gardens, and along stream and pond edges. Mixes well with ferns and other shade-loving perennials.
Easy-to-grow, this delicate-appearing, cool season grass is one of the few that thrives in moderate shade. Clump-forming with dense clusters of thin, arching, dark green leaves. Feathery clusters of tiny purplish-bronze to silvery flowers rise 3 feet above the foliage and bloom in spring. Hair-like flower stalks sway gracefully in the lightest breeze and are spectacular when backlit by the rising or setting sun. In late summer, clusters turn golden, providing fall and winter interest. Requires little maintenance. Prune old leaves to ground level in late winter before new shoots appear. Tolerates drought. Does not do well in limestone areas. Provides nesting materials and cover for songbirds and small mammals.
