Compact, clump-forming perennial highly prized for its summer and fall beauty. Blue-green spring foliage matures to burgundy-red in late summer and fall. Foliage is topped by plumes of pinkish-red, airy flower clusters that appear to hover over the foliage like a cloud. Plumes turn tan-beige in fall and persist into winter, providing visual interest. When in flower, plant height may reach 4 feet. Cut back clumps to ground level in late winter. Be careful not to over-fertilize or overwater as plants may flop over. Tolerates occasional flooding and a wide range of soils including dry soils, but prefers moist sandy or clay soils. Tolerates drought once established. Seed capsules attract songbirds.
