Upright perennial with graceful arching stems and parallel-veined leaves that turn golden in fall. Pairs of bell-shaped, greenish-white flowers dangle beneath stems from leaf axils in the spring. Flowers are followed by blue-black berries in the fall. Slowly spreads by rhizomes (underground stems), but not colonizing. Rhizomes are starchy, edible, and bear scars resembling the ancient Hebrew seal of King Solomon, hence the common name. Attracts butterflies and birds.
