CRCCD – Marginal Wood Fern

Description

Dryopteris marginalis

CT DR

Soil:  Neutral to Acidic, Well-drained
Moisture:  Average to Moist
Light:  Part to Full Shade
Plant Height:  1.5 to 2 feet
Pests:  None
Landscape Value:  Great for massing in shade gardens and woodland areas.  Good as an accent plant mixed in with other native perennials.  Excellent for stabilizing shaded slopes.  Good for use in flower arrangements.

A standout in the shade garden, this non-spreading, evergreen fern has blue-green, leathery fronds that arise in circles from a central rootstock.  Fiddleheads emerge in spring and are golden brown and “furry”.  In snowy winters, may be seen protruding through blankets of snow, providing contrast to the surrounding white.  Protect from wind to keep foliage looking nice.  Tolerates drought once established.  Very cold tolerant.
