Clump-forming, deciduous fern with graceful, finely-textured light-green fronds (leaves) and shiny black, wiry stipes (stems). Fronds are divided into finger-like projections creating a unique overall fan shape. Fronds emerge as burgundy red fiddleheads in the spring. Spreads slowly by slender, creeping rhizomes (underground stems) to form colonies. Especially likes northern exposures and rocky seeps or springs. Does not tolerate drying out or wet, poorly-drained soils. Needs protection from wind. Provides cover for toads and lizards.
