A low-maintenance favorite that loves heat! Shrub-like, low-growing perennial with aromatic gray-green leaves and showy spikes of fragrant purple-violet flowers that bloom June to August. Flowers are used fresh or dried for cooking, medicinal teas, sachets, potpourris, bath salts, and floral arrangements. Produces most fragrant leaves and flowers on young stems. Prune 2-year and older plants in spring, cutting back woody stems by one-third. This will stimulate new growth, leading to better foliage and more flowers. To protect plants in winter, mulch with wood chips or bark mulch in late fall after a freeze. Susceptible to powdery mildew if grown in areas with poor air circulation. Tolerates drought when established. Attracts butterflies, bees and other pollinators. Cold hardy.
