A stately, clump-forming fern with large, dark green, backward-arching fronds that taper abruptly near the tips. Considered the largest of the North American wood ferns, it is prized for its statuesque, vase-shaped form. Spreads slowly by creeping underground stems (rhizomes). Needs protection from winter winds. Tolerates heavy shade and rabbits.
