A showy and vigorous-growing spring ephemeral, with attractive foliage and spectacular displays of upward-facing white flowers that bloom in spring! Flower stalks arise from clumps of deeply-lobed basal leaves. Each stalk bears a whorl of 3- to 5-parted leaves; a single white flower with a golden center rises form the center of the whorl. Spreads rapidly by underground stems (rhizomes) to form a solid groundcover over large areas, and can be aggressive and overwhelm smaller plants. As clumps become crowded, flowering may decrease. If this occurs, plants can be divided in the autumn. Attracts small bees and flies that feed on pollen. Prefers partial shade as too much shade causes flower stalks to flop over. Prefers sites protected from strong winds as thin flower stalks can bend or break. Tolerates clay soil and periodically saturated soil.
