Stout perennial with branched, arching stems and heart-shaped lower leaves. Dense clusters of light blue to purple or sometimes white daisy-like flowers bloom late summer to fall. Pinch back stems several times before mid-July to reduce plant height, promote bushiness, and reduce the need for staking. Deadhead to prevent self-seeding. Susceptible to powdery mildew, leaf spot, rust and wilt if grown in poorly-drained soil. Tolerates shade well. Attracts butterflies, native bees, and predatory insects that prey on insect pests. Provides an essential food source for bees active in late fall, especially new bumble bee queens trying to build energy reserves before winter.
