Showy, multi-stemmed perennial with lacy, blue-green, compound leaves suggestive of meadow rue (Thalictrum), hence the species name.  Leaves appear at mid-stem, emerging blue in the spring and turning blue-green at maturity.  Young plants are covered with a white, waxy bloom.  Loose clusters of inconspicuous yellow-green to purple-brown flowers bloom in spring, giving way to fruits that are ruptured by the developing seeds, an unusual condition among flowering plants.  Berry-like seeds turn deep blue and develop a fleshy coat at maturity, resembling small grapes.  Seeds are difficult to germinate and plants spread slowly on their own, but can be divided just after flowering.  Colonies can also form by slowly spreading rhizomes (underground stems).  Once established, plants can be long-lived and are best left undisturbed.  Attracts bees, small mammals and birds.

5-pint pot

Warning:  Berry-like seeds and roots are poisonous if ingested, causing vomiting and diarrhea. If eaten in excess, high blood pressure and symptoms of nicotine poisoning can occur.  Berries, roots and leaves may cause skin irritation if touched.
