New this year! Clump-forming perennial that greens up early in the spring, forming a tuft of grass-like leaves about two feet tall. In late spring, triangular stalks rise up about one foot over the base. Stalks are topped by several spikes each containing male flowers at the base and female flowers at the tip. Coppery brown seedheads form in mid-summer. Spreads by rhizomes (underground stems) and self seeds. During hot, dry summers, foliage may die back. Seeds attract songbirds and game birds. Tolerates dry soil and drought better than many other sedges. Does not tolerate shading from taller, broad-leaved plants.
