Give A Bark for a Clean State Park!
Health and environmental risks of pet waste
Pet waste management outreach materials and other resources
Working with Connecticut’s Chatfield
Hollow State Park,
a favorite place for many dog walkers, the District is sponsoring a new, Summer
2007 campaign to provide FREE pet waste bags and disposal stations for dog
walkers’ convenience!
Why should I worry about leaving
one “deposit” on the park’s trails?
There are about 1,600 dogs in the
Town of Killingworth alone. Add to that about 1,400 dogs registered in
the Town of Madison. That means there are approximately 2,250 lbs
of dog waste produced per day in the area around Chatfield Hollow State Park The park is visited
daily by many of these local dogs, which means the potential amount of waste left by each single dog
every day in the park could be excessive.
Better ways to scoop the waste
at state parks!
Chatfield Hollow State Park has new pet waste stations. Take a
bag from one of our stations around the park to scoop your dog’s poop and use
the trash bin for clean and safe disposal. Leaving dog waste on the ground puts the lake and swimmers at a
health risk!
BRING IT! Bring your own bags to the park or grab one provided
at one of the stations for your walk.
BAG IT! Use the bag as a glove to scoop the waste,
then turn the bag inside out and seal. You can keep a small bottle of hand
sanitizer with you or wash your hands with soap and water when you are done
bagging.
DISPOSE OF IT! Place the bag in the pet waste trash can at
one of the stations. Never dispose of
bagged waste in the park’s composting toilets or other toilet facilities as this
ruins the toilet systems.
Join us!
District staff are visiting the
park to hand out FREE Doggie Bags full of human and dog treats! Be sure to look for our table during your
walk and stop by to say "Hi" and learn more.
This effort is made possible with
support from a US EPA Clean Water Act Section 319 Grant administered by the CT
Department of Environmental Protection.
Doggie Bags include generous donations from the all-natural dog treat
company, Blue Dog Bakery!
